The Story Behind the Song

"Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" was written in 1934 by composer J. Fred Coots (music) and lyricist Haven Gillespie (words). It was published by Leo Feist, Inc. The earliest known commercial recording was made on October 24, 1934 by banjoist Harry Reser and His Orchestra (Decca), with Tom Stacks on vocal. A version by George Hall and His Orchestra (vocal by Sonny Schuyler) also gained early popularity on Bluebird Records.

The song exploded into national consciousness in November 1934 when comedian and singer Eddie Cantor performed it on his popular radio show. Within 24 hours the public reaction was overwhelming: 500,000 copies of sheet music and more than 30,000 records were sold. The simple, memorable warning—"He's making a list, he's checking it twice"—struck a chord during the Great Depression, giving families a lighthearted way to encourage good behavior in children.

Why It Worked
  • Catchy, repetitive chorus easy for kids to sing
  • Perfect mix of fun and gentle discipline
  • Timeless "naughty or nice" concept that still resonates today
  • Strong holiday imagery without being overly religious

Songwriters: J. Fred Coots & Haven Gillespie

J. Fred Coots composed the bright, memorable melody while Haven Gillespie crafted the playful yet pointed lyrics. Gillespie, a prolific Tin Pan Alley songwriter, was born James Haven Gillespie on February 6, 1888 in Covington, Kentucky, just minutes from Independence and the heart of Northern Kentucky served by 41051.com.

A Covington native who attended local schools, Gillespie went on to write many standards including "You Go to My Head," "Honey," and "That Lucky Old Sun." The enormous success of "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" remains one of his most lasting contributions to American popular music and holiday tradition.

Cultural Impact & Legacy

The song's influence extends far beyond record sales. It helped cement the modern image of Santa's "naughty or nice" list in popular culture. In 1970, the Rankin/Bass stop-motion television special Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town (narrated by Fred Astaire) introduced the song to a new generation and remains a beloved holiday staple. The track has appeared in countless films, commercials, and television episodes. Its simple message continues to delight children while giving adults a nostalgic smile every December.

Full Lyrics

You better watch out,
You better not cry,
Better not pout,
I'm telling you why:
Santa Claus is comin' to town.

He's making a list
And checking it twice,
Gonna find out
Who's naughty or nice.
Santa Claus is comin' to town.

He sees you when you're sleeping,
He knows when you're awake.
He knows if you've been bad or good,
So be good for goodness sake!

You better watch out!
You better not cry
Better not pout, I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is comin' to town.

He sees you when you're sleeping,
He knows when you're awake.
He knows if you've been bad or good,
So be good for goodness sake!
Santa Claus is comin' to town!
