Serving the Community of Independence, Kentucky

Overview

The Independence Police Department (IPD) serves the city of Independence, Kenton County, Kentucky, a suburban community with a population of approximately 26,772. Headquartered at 5409 Madison Pike, the IPD is authorized to employ 33 personnel, including sworn officers and support staff, to serve an 18-square-mile area.

The department provides patrol operations, criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, and community-oriented policing, working alongside the Kenton County Police Department and Sheriff's Office.

Leadership

Led by Chief Brian Ferayorni, the IPD focuses on modernizing operations and strengthening community ties. Key initiatives include:

  • Adding an Assistant Chief and revising sergeant structure.
  • Enhancing surveillance systems and technology.
  • Prioritizing recruitment of community-focused officers.
  • Supporting programs like the Citizens Police Academy.

Chief Ferayorni, a Boone County High School graduate, has been with the IPD since 2000 and can be reached at bferayorni@cityofindependence.org.

Staffing and Recruitment

As of April 2024, the IPD achieved full staffing with 33 personnel, including new officers Will Parks and Ryan Jones. The department employs 20–33 sworn officers and support staff, with a social worker added in November 2024 to address mental health and social service needs.

Recruitment remains a priority, with Chief Ferayorni seeking dedicated officers. Recent police testing attracted only 25–30 candidates, reflecting regional challenges.

Community Engagement

The IPD emphasizes community-oriented policing through programs like:

Offers training in patrol procedures, crisis intervention, and drug prevention to educate residents.

Encourages residents to report suspicious activities and collaborate with officers.

Officers patrol side streets and off-road paths for enhanced community presence.

Operations and Services

The IPD's mission is to safeguard lives and property through:

  • Crime Prevention: Proactive patrols and community programs.
  • Criminal Investigations: Handling theft, burglary, and other crimes.
  • Traffic Management: Enforcing traffic laws and promoting road safety.
  • Training: Educating residents via the Citizens Police Academy.

The department operates 24/7, coordinating with Kenton County Dispatch for emergency response.

Historical Context and Challenges

The IPD has a history of service. Challenges include recruitment difficulties, resource constraints, and evolving community needs. The addition of a social worker and technology upgrades reflect a forward-thinking approach.
